📍 Bear’s Hump, Waterton Lakes, May 2023
Sometimes you just need to step away, feel the cold mountain air on your skin, and remind yourself how small we all really are. I’ve been craving a bit of grounding lately, so I grabbed my gear and headed straight up to Bear’s Hump.

It’s a short trail, but it doesn’t waste any time getting right into it. Continuous switchbacks, rustic wooden steps, and pine trees framing the path. With every step, my lungs felt the burn, but there’s something so therapeutic about moving your body against the quiet weight of the mountain. No rush, just taking in the earthy scent of the forest and listening to the wind creeping through the trees.

And then, you reach the rocky ledge.
The moment you step onto that cliff edge, the entire world just opens up beneath you. The breeze hits your face, your hair flies everywhere, and suddenly the quiet settles in.
From up there, you get this endless, unobstructed view of Upper Waterton Lake stretching out into the horizon, cradled between raw, towering peaks. Below sits the tiny townsite and the iconic Prince of Wales Hotel, looking like a miniature scene from a movie.

I just stood there on the cold rock for a while, taking deep breaths and capturing four quick snapshots of the landscape because honestly, photos never fully do this place justice, but I wanted to keep a piece of this stillness with me.
Bear’s Hump isn’t about crushing a long, exhausting trek. It’s about that quick reset. That reminder to breathe, touch nature, and soak in something beautiful. If you ever need a quick escape to clear your mind and take in an unforgettable view, this spot on the edge of the world is waiting for you.
